Urenio Watch Watch: Intelligent Cities / Smart Cities

Intelligent Cities, wireless

The ‘Intelligent Cities Initiative’, a wireless broadband pilot project created and implemented by the @Wales Digital Media Initiative, has been shortlisted in the ‘best public wi-fi product’ category of the international Wireless Broadband Innovation Awards, London, 20 April 2005.

‘Intelligent Cities is a high capacity broadband project that enables companies to transfer data at high speed, currently at over 200 times faster than entry level broadband. Currently providing speeds of up to 100 Mb/s, but upgradable to 1Gb/s, the project was originally aimed at the media / digital media sectors but with very significant implications for the provision of low cost broadband to all sectors across Wales.

The first implementation phase of the project focused on trialing the advanced technology in the Cardiff Bay media industry and on the Treforest Industrial Estate in conjunction with wireless networking service provider Treforest-Wireless.com. The network is set for expansion to Merthyr in the next few months.

The @Wales Digital Media Initiative, funded by the Welsh Development Agency and European Regional Development Fund, is a specialist business accelerator located in the heart of Cardiff Bay, Wales’ largest digital and media cluster.
