Following the adoption of policies to promote the transnational dimension of clusters in Europe, the Commission published two surveys on statistical analysis and overview of cluster development and policy support in the EU.
The reports are available at the website of the European Cluster Observatory, which has identified more than 2000 regional clusters in Europe and makes the estimation that roughly 38% of all European employees work in enterprises that are part of a cluster.
They give important statistical information about clusters in the EU, though their theoretical background could be better, making some steps from Porter’s views on clusters and towards more recent research on knowledge-based clustering.
