Opening up the smart city: The smarticipate platform

smarticipate logoThrough smarticipate citizens will be given access to data about their city, enabling them to better support the decision-making process. Local governments will have the means to tap into the ingenuity of their residents, gaining valuable ideas. This two-way feedback makes cities more democratic and dynamic. Residents will also play an active role in verifying and contributing to data.

The smarticipate platform will give users the information available to decision-makers in local authorities when making planning decisions, such as applicable legal frameworks and relevant policies.

The platform will be trialed in three major European cities: London, Rome, and Hamburg. Through smarticipate, the choices made by local governments become more transparent, democratic and inclusive. If successful in these three cities, the project platform will be made available across Europe.

The smarticipate platform creates a more direct connection between the local authority and its residents, allowing for public services to be tailored to those that are receiving them.

How will it work in practice?

Open data will be fed into the smarticipate platform which will then be displayed visually, allowing users to get real-time feedback on their proposals. The platform will be publically accessible via an app for smartphones and tablets, as well as through the smarticipate website.

Users will be able to give input on specific planning cases (as determined by the three partner cities) and will have the ability to propose use scenarios for public land. All users can view suggestions made and respond to them.
