R&I Regional Viewer: New Visualization Tool

s2eThe R&I Regional Viewer is a new tool developped by the Stairway to Excellence (S2E)team that visualizes and compare Research & Innovation investments under different funding channels and EU programmes across EU Regions.

The tool has been developped by the Stairway to Excellence (S2E) project and comprises three sets of data:

1. Main economic indicators from Eurostat

Latest available data on key selected indicators from EUROSTAT (e.g. GDP, GERD, Unemployment rate) for each region of the 28 EU Member States. Economic indicators are going to be updated regularly and include: GDP, population, R&D personnel, R&D expenditure, unemployment rate etc.

v

GDP per capita, Eurostat (2014).

    2. Planned R&I-related investments under ESIF

Planned R&I-related investments in European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) comprising ERDF, ESF, CF and YEI funding programmes over the period 2014-2020. Regional data include the thematic allocation at the regional level under regional Operational Programmes plus the (estimated) region’s share of national, multi-regional and transnational cooperation programmes. The indicators include: research and innovation processes in large enterprises, investment in infrastracture in SME, technology transfer and univerisity-enterprise cooperation, support to social enterprises, etc.

sdf

Total ESIF Research & Innovation per capita per year.

3. Horizon 2020 funding captured by stakeholders across EU Regions

Horizon 2020 indicators are based on the amount of funding captured by beneficiaries in the regions. The regionalisation of data may be affected by a headquarter effect (HQE) in some Member States due to the difference between the (physical) location of the actual research performer and the (legal) location of the beneficiaries’ headquarter (this problem affects in particular large public research organisations).  The indicators include programmes related to: future and emerging technologies, innovation in SMEs, smart green and integrated transport, government sector, etc.

About Stairway to Excellence (S2E)

The “Cohesion Policy and the synergies with the research and development funds: the STAIRWAY TO EXCELLENCE (S2E)” project was launched in 2014 within the Smart Specialisation Platform (S3P). The Stairway to Excellence (S2E) project aims to support EU13 member states and their regions in developing and exploiting the synergies between European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), Horizon 2020 (H2020) and other EU funding programmes and:

  • Assist them in closing the innovation gap, in order to promote excellence in all regions and EU countries;
  • Stimulate the early and effective implementation of national and regional Smart Specialisation Strategies.
