The recently published white paper on “Intelligence and Co-creation in Smart Specialisation Strategies’ outlines some key conclusions from the Online S3 project. The project was funded under the Horizon 2020 programme. According to the authors, Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3), linking regional, national, and EU policy frameworks, regulations and strategy objectives require a variety of data and methods to define problems, priorities and objectives, and use suitable policy instruments.

REFLOW is an EU H2020 project, from 2019 to 2022, that seeks to understand and transform urban material flows and to co-create and test circular and regenerative solutions in urban and peri-urban areas across Europe. The vision of REFLOW is to develop circular and regenerative cities through the re-localisation of production and the reconfiguration of material flows at different scales, leveraging Fab Labs and makerspaces as catalysts for wide-scale collaboration and co-creation conducive to systemic, sustainable change. The project operates at the international level, mobilising existing networks and movements that are working towards a new productive model for cities such as Circular Cities, C40 Cities and Fab City Global Initiative.
This book by Dariusz Jemielniak and Aleksandra Przegalinska examines how networked technology enables the emergence of a new kind of social collaboration in modern societies. It covers the sector of “sharing economy” as well as different models of peer production and collaborative media production and consumption, while also considering hactivism, social movements and citizen science. The authors consider as well existing challenges for the future of collaboration in times of fake news, bots and other challenges.
This paper “Smart systems of innovation for smart places: Challenges in deploying digital platforms for co-creation and data-intelligence” by Anastasia Panori, Christina Kakderi, Nicos Komninos, Katharina Fellnhofer, Alasdair Reid and Luca Mora, argues that the rise and interconnection of various types of intelligence (artificial, human, collective) could transform the way smart places are being created and evolve. Through the case study of the research project OnlineS3, the paper indicates that digital platforms can better respond to the complexity of innovation systems providing dynamic and scale-diverse information.
This book explores the opportunities for incorporating responsive technologies in spatial designs to improve the quality of public spaces. It also presents inspiring examples from a two-year practice-based study of responsive public spaces carried out by a consortium of spatial designers, interaction designers and local stakeholders, headed by the Chair of Spatial Urban Transformation of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
The ‘BotellÃ³n no me deja dormirÎ„ project is a collaborative project co-created by the community of neighbours in PlaÃ§a del Sol and technology activists from the project Making Sense EU. A diverse group of people collaborated in order to measure the levels of noise pollution in an attempt to claim a more convivial and inclusive public space.
Open Governance in the Smart City is a scoping report providing an overview of the variety of approaches local governments and communities can take to ICT enabled open governance. Through eleven cases, 9 european and 2 non-european cities, the report also discusses risks and challenges, concluding with a number of recommendations.
