Governing the Complexity of Smart Data Cities: Setting a Research Agenda

Posted on 8 March 20188 March 2018 by Artemis Psaltoglou in Publications on Intelligent Cities / Smart Cities

This chapter develops a research agenda for big and open data in smart cities on the basis of a thorough literature discussion of Actor Network Theory and the key concepts of urban governance and complexity. It sheds light on the challenges that emerge from the intensified interactions between the social and the physical aspects of urban dynamics in the smart city. Continue reading →

The URBAN AND REGIONAL INNOVATION Research (URENIO) is a university lab within the Faculty of Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, conducting research on innovation systems and intelligent cities.

The lab specialiσes in the design and development of DIP (digital-institutional-physical) environments in cities and regions that enable transformative innovations. Our research encompasses models of innovation territories (technology cities, innovation hubs and districts, regional innovation systems, industry ecosystems, hybrid innovation spaces), and innovation strategies and pathways (regional strategies, smart specialisation strategies, simulation and  sandbox experimentation, platform-based innovation, generative AI driven innovation).

In cooperation with Intelspace Technologies (a spinoff of URENIO) we develop platforms and applications tailored for smart cities, intelligent cities, and intelligent environments that drive innovations in efficiency, sustainability, public safety, and carbon neutrality. By integrating digital platforms, e-services, data-driven decision-making, and generative and agentic AI, urban ecosystems are comprehensively transformed, setting new models for cities in the 21st century..
