This paper “Smart systems of innovation for smart places: Challenges in deploying digital platforms for co-creation and data-intelligence” by Anastasia Panori, Christina Kakderi, Nicos Komninos, Katharina Fellnhofer, Alasdair Reid and Luca Mora, argues that the rise and interconnection of various types of intelligence (artificial, human, collective) could transform the way smart places are being created and evolve. Through the case study of the research project OnlineS3, the paper indicates that digital platforms can better respond to the complexity of innovation systems providing dynamic and scale-diverse information.
The Global Internet Report 2017: Paths to Our Digital Future, is the fourth annual report produced by the Internet Society and explores how the internet ecosystem could evolve in the future. Bringing together insights from across a diverse global community, this report tries to inspire all who engage with the internet to think differently and to prepare for the opportunities and challenges on the horizon. Shortly, this report serves to remind us that humans are and should be at the very heart of the Internet and suggests that we need to begin to think differently to acclimatise to the changes we are seeing. 
This report, entitled The Urban Unconnected: Challenging, efforts, and opportunities on the path towards a digital society, explores the levels of urban and rural connectivity across eight major countries and uncovers the challenges faced and the initiatives being implemented by five of the world’s major cities. The research was commissioned by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) to the research and consulting firm IHS Markit. 
The use of digital tools and visualisation techniques in the planning is rapidly increasing during the last decade. An article from The Guardian written by Oliver Wainwright and entitled Tinder for cities: how tech is making urban planning more inclusive presents briefly a new wave of digital tools trying to make the urban planning process more transparent, interactive and therefore, inclusive.
